ACTIVITIES
hikes
The Waldviertel is a top destination for hikers. Hiking fans have long known and a flourishing hiking tourism has always developed in the Ysper-Weitental.
In 2009 it was then "officially" confirmed. The southern Waldviertel - the region from the Wachau to the Weinsberger Wald - was the first region in Austria to receive the hiking seal of approval from the "Association for Quality Assurance for Hiking in Austria".

Kanuwandern in Raabs
Bike trips
On tour by bike or e-bike - feel the freedom on two wheels and discover the region at the ideal pace:
When cycling in the Waldviertel, hard-working pedals are always very close to the many natural treasures.
On the saddle, get set, go! In the north-west of Lower Austria it goes up and down, through meadows, forests and streams - preferably by bike. One thing is certain: A break accompanied by a classic bicycle or e-bike keeps you busy. In addition, the Waldviertel invites you to special bike rallies that combine sporting, scenic and culinary enjoyment in a unique way.
Art / theater
The Waldviertel makes culture lovers and art lovers equally happy.
This is ensured by a whole range of cultural events as well as historical monuments and locations.
Curtain up and clear the stage: The Waldviertel is rich in natural treasures, but also in art and culture. Historical castles, magnificent palaces, art-loving pens - the historical monuments of the region will inspire you. Speaking of art lovers: numerous galleries and museums delight lovers of the fine arts with changing exhibitions and visits. Concerts, theater and film performances round off the colorful program.
Museums
A journey from the present to the future and past.
The museums, some of which are also located in historical buildings, such as the Archduke Franz Ferdinand Museum in Artstetten Castle or the Freemasons Museum Rosenau Castle, offer insights into very special topics from times long past.
The Krahuletz Museum Eggenburg shows the origin and development of natural and cultural history on a tour, as well as the Elsarn open-air museum gives insights into the everyday life of the rural population and illustrates the crafts of the past.
Castles
Majestic and imposing, the Waldviertel castles guard the region's cultural heritage. Magnificent rooms and extensive gardens invite you to take an exciting trip into the past.
To be the lord of the castle or damsel for a day - anyone who has always wanted to do this has many opportunities in the north of Lower Austria. Schloss Rosenau, Schloss Weitra and Schloss Ottenstein, for example, offer an appropriate setting for festive occasions. Because of the combination of culture, architecture, nature and cuisine, Grafenegg Castle is one of the most important historical castle complexes in Austria.
Craft
In the Waldviertel you can experience craftsmanship up close - and take a piece of tradition and uniqueness home with you. Get to know the Lower Austrian businesses, their owners and their regional quality products. Let's go to the home of handicrafts!
Have you heard of the “Handicrafts and Manufacture in the Waldviertel” initiative? Some of the traditional regional companies let you look over their shoulders at work. They reveal the secrets of glass engraving or show their tricks in wood turning, carpentry, weaving, basket weaving, soap-making or pottery. The main focus is on the traditional Waldviertel branches of wood, stone, textiles and glass. But other regional specialty companies such as mother-of-pearl turnery, sundial production, blacksmithing or engraving are also presented.
Culinary
The taste lies in the nature of the Waldviertel
As in no other region in Austria, the Waldviertel farmers, producers, restaurateurs and hoteliers know how to raise the most valuable treasure for human wellbeing: taste in all its diversity.
From ears of rye to bread, from poppy blossoms to 'gray gold', from tuber to potatoes, from hops to beer or from pond to carp and from meadow grass to pasture cattle - taste is in the nature of the Waldviertel and its people!
Relaxation
Those looking for balance and peace are in good hands in the Waldviertel.
The untouched nature, the clarity of the air and the slightly stimulating climate offer the best conditions to draw strength.
Recharge your batteries with a long walk in the Waldviertel countryside and relax in the small but fine wellness oases of the hotels.
Arrive, switch off and recharge - that is the motto in the Waldviertel.
Model flying
The Waidhofen airfield with a spacious runway and a cozy new clubhouse is located near the "Waldrapp roundabout" towards Thaya.
There is a lot of flight activity all year round - not only on the weekends: every Thursday numerous senior citizens meet and in the summer months vacationing members and guests indulge in their hobby during the week as well.
We enliven our club operations through numerous events, such as seminars, national and international competitions, show flies, etc., where we maintain contacts with model aircraft colleagues from other clubs.
Leisure center
The Waidhofen leisure center, which was completely rebuilt and renovated in 2006/07, has an outdoor pool and is very popular in the region. The bathing area is divided into an adventure pool with various attractions such as wide water slide (12 m), long slide (60 m), floor bubbler, water hedgehog, jet shower as well as a flow channel and a sports pool with a length of 25 m including a diving area with two diving towers.
For the little bathers there is a sand play area and a separate children's pool with a snake slide and a clown shower. The leisure center also provides variety outside of the water. You can play mini golf, PIT-PAT, table tennis, beach volleyball and beach soccer in the complex.
Indoor golf
In addition to the Stadthotel Waidhofen, a high-tech golf simulator and a putting / chipping green are available. So you have optimal playing and training opportunities outside of the golf season and in the evening, of course professionally looked after by the pros at the golf clinic.
• Independent of the time of year and day, daily from 7 am to 7 pm
• For serious training, exciting golf, and just having fun with friends
• Club fitting, driving range, game on the course
• from single player to four-man flight
• Different types of games, from Stableford to Texas Scramble
• 40 preprogrammed golf courses
Fishing & angling
From leisurely hobby fishing to professional ice fishing, from classic stand fishing to fly and spin fishing - the thousands of waters in the Waldviertel allow almost everything an angler's heart desires.
Cross-country skiing
Fairytale landscapes, untouched nature and hundreds of kilometers of well-groomed trails - what more could cross-country skiers want?
No wonder that countless fans of winter sports come to the Waldviertel every year.
